Project of the Month: How Outdoor Living Becomes Reality

Planting Area with gravel walkway
Building Your Project from Finish to Start: An outdoor covered area with wood-burning fireplace and built-in BBQ is ready for use.

It might take an upcoming event or a gathering at someone’s home. Suddenly you visualize something different that would expand your living area beyond the walls of your home, and the idea takes on a life of its own.

One of our current projects is an outdoor covered area, with a wood burning fireplace and a built-in BBQ.  Let’s talk about how this vision becomes reality from finish to start.

During our initial consultation with the clients, we learned they wanted to build a covered area near a beautiful pond with a waterfall and other rockery in their back yard. The BBQ and fireplace would extend their indoor living to the outside. They could cook, stay warm and enjoy the ambience of burning wood at any time of the year.

An architect helped them visualize the idea and generated a set of plans. The images below show how the covered area might look from several perspectives. The clients showed us the site plan and we talked further about budget, logistics, schedules and materials. Then we went to work. Click on the images for a larger view.

Construction drawings and permits were the first order of business. Once permits were in hand then excavation and concrete footings took place. An inspection of this work was completed and the roof framing began.

Below, you can see how the project looks in progress. Concrete columns with cedar pillars that support the structure are put into place. The fireplace is being  built and will be covered with stone veneer. The covered roof is being framed and will be finished with the same roofing material as the original house. This project is now complete. Spring is here and the homeowners are right on schedule to enjoy their new outdoor living space as the warmer weather arrives, with no worry about any rain.

This project is typical of many of our outdoor covered area projects. Dependent on permitting and weather, a project like this might take 6-12 weeks to complete. The budget can range from $50K to $200K dependent on the size and complexity of the installation and the materials used.
